Question:
Why are Disabled/Handicapped restrooms genderless? Why don't we have the "Male" or "Female" option?

Why are Disabled/Handicapped restrooms genderless? "Able-bodied" men and women get to choose between a "male" and "female" bathroom...but we only have one option?

I don't like it how disabled/handicapped men and women are just lumped together as "all the same" and made to use the same restrooms!

There should be "Male Handicapped" restrooms and "Female Handicapped" restrooms as both genders have different needs in the bathroom!!

Most of the public restrooms I've seen have a wheelchair-accessible stall. I have yet to see Men's, Women's, and Disabled anywhere. But as others have pointed out, a restroom for someone in a wheelchair requires more space than one for able-bodied people. These restrooms may also not get as much use because it's not every day someone in a wheelchair will come into any particular building and need to use the restroom. It's nothing personal, I'm sure, but a matter of logistics.

The simplest answer is that the amount of space needed to make a handicap accessible restroom is significantly greater than a normal restroom. This being said most building codes in most areas require that all commercial or public buildings restrooms be handicap accessible so that there is simply a male and female and not a handicap specific restroom.

I haven't noticed this that much. Every public restroom that I've been in in recent memory has had a dedicated handicap stall it it in the mens' bathroom. I'm sure the women's restroom had the same, though I can't confirm it. I have seen "family" restrooms though, but those were there in addition to the traditional male/female restrooms.

It is very simple and very important that a disability designated restroom is genderless. Often, a person with a disability needs the assistance of an aid or a parent pr a spouse/partner when using the restroom. Often this person is not the same sex as the person requiring the toilet. Many people object to a person of the "wrong" sex entering the restroom of the opposite sex.

These restrooms also often double as family restrooms - same issue applies.

And yes, you are right, different sexes do have different needs at times - and all those should be accommodated in a genderless restroom.

That's a good question, people that are handicapped should have a male and female restroom as well.

now i dont know and dont care if you are handicapped or not but why are you complaining. have you ever had to wait to use your special needs rest rooms? i never see a handicapped person wait to use them. then in most regulr bathrooms they have handicapped stalls anyway.

i hate poeple like you that complain about things that dont matter. r u just bored with life so you look for something to complain about.

by the way we dont choose which one we go into, we just go to our respective restroom. one would think in this day and age we wouldnt even need that anymore....

i dont get it, most handicapped poeple dont want special treatment but your bitching about a placard that denotes a gender to a toilet that works the same for both sexs.

Disabled restrooms take up far more room than regular stalls and most places just can't accommodate more than one.

hi, you have a very good point there, i didnt even notice, now that i am thinking about it, i had seen a disabled sight that dont say male or female, i do agree with you, that not very nice, you could take it further , that attitudes need to change, you could contact disability rights, on www.bccdp.org.uk put it to them, and they could help you to take this matter further.

Do you have 'male' and 'female' restrooms at your house?
