Or must it be a psychiatrist for mental illness?

I think the question is about discharging a student loan based on total & permanent disability

For the OP:

in most cases, it requires the paperwork to be filled out by an MD (read the criteria from your lender).... and, in that case it means either a Psychiatrist or some other type of MD.

Your psychologist could try it... and see if it works...

I have no idea who can fill out student loan forms but it doesn't matter who fills out SSI forms. Although why you would pay to have a psychologist fill out any forms for SSI is beyond me. Why can't you fill out your own forms? When a claim is filed or a medical review is being done, Social Security sends forms directly to any treating physicians, including psychologists, for completion about your medical condition.

ET is wrong about the doctor giving a date of disability; Social Security determines date of disability. If you've ever worked it is the date you stopped working and earning over $1010 a month ($1000 in 2011). If you haven't worked and you file for SSI it isn't any earlier than the month the claim is filed because there is no retroactivity. Social Security ordinarily obtains medical records for twelve months before they date they set as date of onset.

a psychologist or psychiatrist can fill them out for yo. be sure they give a date for when they feel the disability began; because the ssi/social security benefits will be retroactive to that date.
