Riker's Island in NYC is a prison hospital - all of its inmate are diagnosed with mental illnesses as are the prisoners at Skyview Psychiatric Prison Unit, Texas; Bellevue Prison Ward, NYS; California Medical Facility in Vacaville, CA; Federal Medical Center, Carswell, Fort Worth, Texas; Federal Medical Center, Devens, Devens, Massachusetts; Federal Medical Center, Fort Worth, Fort Worth, Texas; Federal Medical Center, Lexington, Lexington, Kentucky; Federal Medical Center, Rochester, Rochester, Minnesota. These are all places where prisoners with psychiatric diagnosis are held in separate wards: Bronx Psychiatric Center, NY; Sing Sing, Westchester; The Center for Forensic Psychiatry Correctional Facility, Ann Arbor, MI; New Hampshire Hospital; Eastern State Hospital, Forensic Division, VA; - just to name a few.

As for people with other disabilities - they are housed with the typical prison population - and not always with the needed accommodation to lead a dignified life - even for a prisoner.

Like others have mentioned, it depends upon the disability. I'm in a wheelchair living in Phoenix. I give bi-monthly talks at the jail downtown and it's completely wheelchair accessible. I hear the largest prison in the state is also.

There is no such thing as a 'Disabled Prison". If a PWD commits a crime they are sent to a regular prison. If their medical condition warrants it, they are sent to the prison medical ward. If they are mentally incompetent and have been declared mentally unfit to stand trial, they are sent to a mental hospital.

PWDs and Non-PWDs have the same rights in prison and are treated as such. In fact, PWDs with intellectual Disabilities in prison on Death-Row have been executed for certain crimes that they have committed.

Having worked in a correctional facility, I can tell you that they are incarcerated within the general population within a security level that allows them to function within the capabilities of their disability. Crime befits the punishment in most cases, and being disabled is not an excuse to allow them to remain at large.

They go to the same prison as an abled person but they just have a different wing.

No. There might be a wing in a hospital or something like that for them, but if they are abled to do the crimes then they can serve it in the general population

Mentally disabled criminals are put in facilities that support these type of prisoners and are equipped for them.

No, there aren't. I don't think it would be fair to put them in reg prisons either, depending on the crime.

A judge would probaly be more lenient for a disabled person if it was a petty crime, but if it was serious they would go to a regular person where every other person goes. Wouldnt have them up on the 2nd or 3rd floo etc, most likely would be put with all the rapists, wife beaters, bent cops and paedophiles.

There is a simple solution really, if you consider it unfair then its only common sense they shouldnt commit a crime, anyone who objects to any treatment while in prison knows how to avoid being treated unfairly, DONT GET SENT TO PRISON. duh A criminal is a criminal and IMO isnt entitled to ANY special consideration, if I had my way they would have a lot less
