I'm disabled and want to move to California, what resources should I look into?

Being as I'm on disability I don't have much of an income, and I can't work. On the plus side, that means I'm not worried about the job market. On the negative side, that means housing becomes a major issue. I am currently living in a disability residential system on the east coast but I would be okay on my own. I tried looking around a few CA websites but it's easy to get lost in them. I would most likely want to live in San Francisco, my second choice being Los Angeles.

Basically I'm looking for any and all tips on what to do, what to expect, and/or what to be careful of. I have lived on my own before at least, but I had a job then. I have fairly geeky, liberal, and open-minded interests, hence the choice of San Fran specifically.

I'm a California Native & I need to warn you about the long waiting lists that we have for housing...especially low income/government assisted or section 8, which can be a one year or a 5 year wait. Landlords & property management companies will not rent or lease to anyone who does not have an income that they can "attach", in case you fail to pay your monthly rent. Almost every city & county rents on a month-to-month basis & can ask you to leave at anytime or for anyreason if they choose to do so.

You need to establish residency in California for a minimum of 6 months before the housing agencies will work with you.

Our state is currently cutting off disabled people from medical coverage. Since most people started receiving more money on their social security checks...California was kind enough to decide that we now make too much money & this puts us in the income category to pay for our own medical care!

If you have no job or way to make a higher than poverty level wage...I urge you not to put yourself in jeopardy by moving to California, unless you have friend or relatives that you can fall back on. Otherwise, you will end up in a homeless shelter & use your monthly check just trying to stay away from the thieves who look for people like you to prey on. California is the con capital of the world & the disabled are easy prey out here.

I wish I had better news...but the truth might keep you safe. It's getting crazy in Cali.

I suggest getting help from Section 8 housing. If you're currently on Section 8 you need to look into transferring it to California. If you aren't getting housing assistance be prepared to get on a 8-10 year waiting list. It might even be a few years until CA is taking applications. Other than that, I would suggest calling the Housing Authority of the county you're interested in moving to and obtaining a low-income housing list of rentals. Another thing, you may want to check out a smaller suburb of San Francisco for housing. San Francisco is only 49 square miles, with 750,000 residents. The entire Bay Area has about 5-6 million people, so you might want to consider a smaller Bay area suburb. San Francisco, itself, has a 5-10 period between application openings, and another 5-10 wait once you apply. You would have a better chance getting hit by lightning. Just don't make the move without already having a place to stay. As far as your second choice, you don't want to live in LA, it's just too big with too many people.

I too would like to move to CA but just like you have disability and income problems (though I'm currently not on assistance) but from what I'm reading here and others have told me, I would suggest, don't live right in the cities, but cheaper nearby suburbs with easy access to the city.

You've selected 2 of the most expensive cities to live in in California and, therefore, the country. I suggest contacting a local independent living center in areas you would consider and ask them about local resources. Here's a link to help you find California independent living centers: http://www.cfilc.org/site/c.ghKRI0PDIoE/b.836519/k.4425/What_is_an_Independent_Living_Center.htm

You arent being ignorant. remember fact, purely the choice. you do no longer desire those human beings to go through. you in basic terms do no longer desire them to be right here in the event that they cant stay a thoroughly satisfying existence as you have come to renowned it. you in basic terms did no longer know which you would be able to stay a thoroughly satisfying existence in those form of situations. you have for sure in no way been on the part of somebody who has dealt with those form of themes. we're not lots as worse off. we are able to do maximum each and every little thing you do, purely diverse. I propose i like water snowboarding, snow snowboarding, i like swimming, camping out, bowling. I do exactly no longer do it precisely as you do. What you spot as suffering is purely distinction. Now relating to the being in society, this is purely what you spot. We each and every have our jobs in existence, in spite of if its in basic terms to furnish somebody else a purpose. So somebody can look when you. Now approximately dying penalty and assisted suicide and those on welfare those are thoroughly different themes. you need to truly study lots by technique of volunteering at a nursing homestead or a ladies and boys club. they'd particularly instruct you what all of us are attempting to describe. i do no longer know how previous you're yet i began out volunteering at a nursing at 2 or 3. i think of I coped so properly when I became paralyzed because of the fact of them. they have lots to instruct because of the fact they are such solid people who take care of such confusing and confusing issues usual. issues you need to use on your existence and usual situations too. despite the fact that perhaps next time however, you need to do your "rant" in a splash "politically superb" way. ;) :p "human beings" get indignant. :) lack of wisdom is the state wherein one lacks wisdom, is ignorant of something or chooses to subjectively forget approximately education. this could not be at a loss for words with being unintelligent, as one's point of intelligence and point of education or known wisdom are no longer a similar. i've got faith she wisely categorized her "rant."
